How long will my new computer be a good one?

I just bought a pretty expensive PC but my friend has me worried about the pace technology is advancing. I just want to know how long it will be before my PC is junk like the last one and wont play games great anymore.

Nice processor and motherboard! I think you have a good, above average computer for right now today. It is a good computer for what you would want right now. And I would say, you will have a good computer for at least one year.

But I have to be honest with you. Intel is coming out with a new processor, the Nehalem processor and it will have up to 8 real cores and be able to emulate another 8 virtual cores (16 cores total). So while the quad core is cool right now, it is going to get old faster than you want to. There will be a transition period between quad and I guess they will call it an octacore processor. That is why I give you a year rather than 3 - 6 months. The dual cores are going to bite the dust and be history just like the monocores. So you were smart to invest in a quad core processor. It will also take time for the octacore processors to come down from their initial lofty pricing to make them anywhere realistic to all but the rich and famous.

I predict that by 2010 or 2011 we will have a lot more software that takes advantage of the additional cores and is multithreaded. Microsoft knows now, they need to come up with a lean, truely secure and customer directed operating system.
But the software developers are going to have to get with it. The software companies are going to have to invest in 64 bit compiler versions that will make multithreading native to the programming environment, thus forcing programmers to migrate to multithreaded software. So for now, I suggest you not go to 64 bit or waste money only un-needed or usable RAM.
