buying a gun need help?
im about to buy a gun but im having trouble between the the two i want. either a ruger mini-14 with ati tactical stock (ruger is making them now with the stock straight from the factory) or a bushmaster ar-15 a2 i like the way the ruger looks but i heard the bushmaster shoots better any opinion from experienced shooters
As someone who owns both a Mini-14 and a couple of Bushy AR-15s, I have some opinions, but it isn't as simple as which is better. Each rifle has its own strengths (and weaknesses).
One of the AR-15 is a Bushmaster National Match setup for HP service rifle competition. The rifle has a super-smooth trigger and is an absolute tack-driver out to 600 yards. On the other hand it represents a pretty significant investement (~ $2k) and is too heavy to want to carry into the field.
The other AR-15 is a Bushmaster shorty CQB setup (multi-position telestock, short barrel with permanently attached flash hider to meet the 16" min length, lots of accessory rails, aimpoint sight, vertical foregrip, etc.). This is an extremely handy, lightweight, fast handling carbine well suited to home defense and urban situations. I think the total cost of this rig was also around (~$2k). The short barrel means that even with optics, it is not particularly accurate beyond 100 yards. Without optics, the short sight radius means its really not very accurate beyond 50 yards.
My Mini is an older stainless model ranch rifle with the integral scope base. The only modification on it is the addition of rubber butt pad. Its a great plinker and lots of fun to shoot. It has torn up many a tin can from 25-50 yards distance, and has been very reliable, with even cheap ammo and requires a lot less cleaning/maintenance than the AR-15s. The downsides are that even with a scope, its pretty worthless out past 75 yards, and it is hard to find quality magazines. The barrel is just not very accurate. This one is a great rifle to toss in the trunk of the car for a rainy day. Total cost around ($500).
Bottom line:
AR-15s are excellent rifles. They are so modular and widely manufactured that the huge assortment of after-market accessories makes them like legos for big kids.
The Mini-14 is a very reliable and affordable, quality firearm that requires minimal maintenance but has a lot less options available.
When picking a rifle the bottom line is that you want to pick one that fits your personal taste and budget. Ideally you should shoot one of each before making a selection. Chances are you will find both of these rifles at your local shooting range, and their owners will be happy to talk about them and perhaps let you put a magazine downrange.
