The world of birds, Hout Bay

While holidaying in Hout Bay, be sure to add the World of Birds to your list of family activities in which to engage in. The World of Birds is the largest bird park in Africa and offers more than 3000 birds and small animals including the popular squirrel monkeys and amusing meerkats. For Bird lovers, there are of course birds in abundance and they range from barbets to waterfowl and are housed in 100 landscaped walkthrough aviaries scattered over the wildlife sanctuary's 4 hectares of land.

There are many indigenous birds housed at the sanctuary, such as the blue crane, whose breeding status is vulnerable in the wild, so the World of Birds has set up the African crane breeding center and as a result has the world's largest breeding stock of 40 breeding cranes. Visitors will also be exposed to birds that they may otherwise never be in contact with, such as the only bird ever to have a ballet written for it, the swan, four of these swans occupy the sanctuary's ponds. Another exotic attraction is the Indian blue peafowl, a photographers dream in spring and early summer when their feathers are in full bloom. These majestic birds are not confined to cages and wander the paths freely, much to many of the visitors' delight.

There is a small variety of reptiles at the World of Birds, including blue tongued skink, green iguanas and a large tortoise sanctuary at the top of the park.

There are many other activities in Hout Bay for those holidaying in the area, as well as numerous luxury self catering cottages that cater for the single traveler as well as large groups and families. Hout Bay self catering accommodation is also ideal for business people seeking self contained luxury cottages that are close to the central business district, but far enough away from the bustle of the city to relax. Accommodation in Hout Bay is perfect for that reason as it is just 20 minutes drive to Town along the picturesque winding cliffs of Chapmans Peak.
