Binoculars: Is price everything?
Binoculars are one of the handiest, useful and most widespread of all optical instruments. Virtually everyone who spends time outdoors owns, or needs to own a pair of binoculars. More than 46 million birdwatchers spend almost $500 million annually on binoculars and related equipment in the U.S., according to the federal Fish and Wildlife Service. Birdwatchers aren't the only ones looking to get close to their subjects--boaters, hunters, sports fans, theater-goers, and experienced travelers all rely on binoculars.
But binoculars are about more than simple magnification. Depending on how you plan to use them, you'll want to think about varying combinations of weight, power, image quality, durability, field of view, and ease of use.
The first thing to understand about binoculars is that they are really just two small telescopes mechanically linked together. All of the facts and information that help you to understand telescopes also pertains to binoculars. Each side of a pair of binoculars has a prime focal length, an objective lens, an ocular (eyepiece), and an exit pupil.
Price is a factor. But surprisingly, in recent years tests have shown that quality doesn't always come with price. More-expensive models do have more-effective coatings on their optics (lenses and prisms), which sharpen the image and keep stray light from bouncing around inside the binoculars. These coatings assist light transmission. They are what produce the blue, red, or green reflections you see when you look into the front objective lens of a pair of binoculars.
Overall, lens and prism quality have improved in binoculars these days. The biggest innovations in binoculars over the last several years are the addition of image-stability technologies and digital-camera capabilities. A product that is well made of high quality components is good, and it is always worth the extra money over shoddy popular priced binoculars. Quality control costs the manufacturer, and you, money, but it is worth it because the result is a better performing pair of binoculars that can last a lifetime. Many things affect both the quality and the price of a pair of binoculars.

What is it? A bright light - low in the North sky near Kamloops, BC - with red, blue & amber flashing lights.?
My husband & I first saw this bright light on Friday evening, Sept.1 '06 - from our deck.
At first we thought that it was an airplane
( because of the flashing colored lights) but it did not seem to move. We watched it for over an hour & it only seemed to move slightly - if at all. Then we thought it must be a star. Do stars have different colored flashing & moving lights? Could it be a star whose light was affected in some way by some haze or smoke in our atmosphere? Other stars nearby looked normal.
When looked at through binoculars, this light seemed to change shape slightly ( to become triangular at the top - joined to a "half oval" at the bottom ) & the red lights were along the oval portion at the bottom - while the amber lights were in the centre & the blue /green lights seemed to be more on the left side. The next evening, we found it was still there in the sky.
Could it have been "The Bell Blimp"?

Based on your description, with the location of the colors of light, it seems to me that this must be a single bright light that is low on the horizon that is being refracted by the atmosphere. The locations of the "lights" of different color are in the correct sequence for refraction into the spectrum. ROYGBIV. You would see blue on top, then green, then amber, then red. That makes sense. Also, the use of binoculars would appear to pinpoint the blue, and widen the amber and red, where most of the light intensity of natural and artificial light would usually occur. For instance.....if you look at a planet such as Jupiter through binoculars you see the same effect. The light colors won't all focus at once because of a phenomenon generated by the lenses called "chromatic aberration" where the reds will focus at one point, the ambers at another, and the blues at another, but they don't focus all at once. For some reason ambers tend to make a "fatter" image, again, probably because of increased light intensity in that range.
The flashing is probably not regular. If it isn't, it could easily be explained by refraction in the atmosphere again caused by differences in air temperature and density. This is what causes the "twinkling" of stars. It's the same phenomenon, a "mirage" phenomenon, that you see over a hot road. When you have a light source going through that, it really makes a dramatic, multicolored effect. Once in awhile I see that dramatically as Jupiter comes up over the horizon. Multicolored and flashing.
My best guess is you're not seeing aliens. 
If I could be there myself I could probably tell you right what it is. Some reasonable guesses would be: A bright man-made light on the horizon, such as on an oil derrick or on a communications tower or maybe even on a ship that is at anchor that is being heavily refracted by the atmosphere, or maybe you're seeing a star or planet near the horizon. I have my doubts that what you're seeing is a planet, as it doesn't sound to me that you'd be looking at the ecliptic if you're looking north from your location, but I can't say for sure if your directions are a bit off.
The star Vega is quite bright, and at this time of the year from your location you might be seeing it low on the horizon. Keep an eye on it every night. Vega, when on the horizon, I have seen do an effect very much like what you are describing. Keep track of it and see if you can locate it on a star chart. This may well be what you're seeing, while it's being heavily refracted along the horizon.
