If you think the edge only needs a touch up than just use a natural stone like Arkansas stone. And if your knife needs a serious sharpening course than use a diamond sharpening stone. These stones work on the blade faster in comparison to natural stones.
Most of the households and chefs feel sharpening knives at home with the sharpening tools is suitable. These work in the same way as the sharpening stones do but they are better designed to be used at home for the kitchen cutlery. Blade sharpeners are required to maintain the quality and efficiency of the tools and knife. They are frequently used to sharpen the edge of blades.

How to effectively sharpen a blade?
I've gotten a number of sharpeners, but I can't get the blade on my fighting knives sharp. So how does it work? How do I get a razor edge on a fighting knife?
Well it depends on the type of steel your blade is made of and the shape of it also. Most knives made for heavier use will use a thick blade and a 30 degree angle on the cutting edge as opposed to a razor which has a thin tapered blade and may use an angle of 8 degrees or so. As far as the steel, it depends on the type, hardness, grain structure and other factors.
