Useful Grassroots Innovation - Light Weight Tree cum Pole Climbing Device
Mushtaq Ahmed Dar is a young grassroots innovator from Jammu and Kashmir, India. He remembered his childhood accident of falling while climbing a tree to get the idea for one of his innovations – tree cum pole climber, a device which can make climbing trees and poles easy and safe. He had already tasted success with his popular innovation "walnut cracker" and now the time was right to give a try on his childhood wish of making a tree climbing device. He inquired about other tree climbers that were available at that time. Some grassroots innovations had already been done on this very idea but those innovations didn't satisfy him as they were quite heavy and not very efficiently designed. Mushtaq believed that he can make a better tree climber and so he started working on making his own tree climbing equipment and he was right.
His light weight innovation consists of a pair of supporting frames on which the climber can rest his feet, Velcro straps to fasten the feet with the frame, a locking system with a sturdy strap to fix the supporting frames with the tree and a safety belt which needs to be tied around the climber's body and the tree to provide full support and safety to the climber. The locking system facilitates the climber to lock him at any point of time while climbing the tree and his body weight itself is used in locking. This climbing device has been designed in such a way that the person's body weight is distributed on the tree enabling him to hold himself midway while climbing without exerting any extra force.
Useful for society in different ways
The device was made with the guiding idea of helping people in climbing trees safely however, it its utility is much more than that.
The device is useful for the farmers in harvesting the produce from tall tress like coconut palm etc.
Being light, this is easily portable and can be used for climbing electric and telephone poles. So, the electrician or telecom maintenance persons now will not have to carry any ladder with them.
Support and Recognition of the tree climbing device
National Innovation foundation, India (NIF) has recognized and awarded this grassroots innovation and seeing the unique design of this tree cum pole climbing device has also filed a patent application on Mushtaq's name. The product has already been licensed to an entrepreneur with the help of NIF providing fees to Mushtaq.
