Stackable Washer and Dryers vs. Integrated Washer Dryer Combos
There are a growing number of options for compact washer and dryers, but how do you know which option is best for your home? Your options today for home appliances are very different from what they were generations ago. Technological advances have now given you a lot of alternatives to the traditional side-by-side units, but with more choices come a lot of confusing decisions!
If you are trying to determine whether you would be better off purchasing stackable washing machines and dryers or an integrated combo units, it helps to consider exactly what each of these options are and what the advantages and disadvantages of each may be. You will then have the information to determine which is the better fit for your home and lifestyle needs.
Stackable Washer and Dryers
A stackable set is simple a dryer that is designed to sit up on top of a washing machine. You will have all the standard features that are commonly found on regular side-by-side sets, but the dryer will be up a bit higher in the air than you would typically have it.
The advantage to this option is obviously the amount of space you save in your home. It takes half the space to accommodate a stacked set than it would a side-by-side set, which frees up lots of room in your home for other things.
While some stackable sets can be smaller in capacity than a traditional side-by-side set, that is often made up for by having the front loading washing machine (which all washers will load from the front, obviously). Since a front loading washing machine doesn't have the agitator that goes down into a top loading washer, there is more room to completely fill the washer with clothing.
The biggest disadvantage for many people who stack is the physical strain of bending to load the washer and then unload it and transfer all contents up into the dryer. This is more something you have to adjust to than something that takes away from the value of the appliances.
Integrated Washer Dryer Combos
Integrated machines save space just as stackable alternatives, but they do it in a different way. Instead of having the dryer stacked on top of the washing machine, the dryer is included inside the washing machine! Yes, with an integrated combo you purchase one appliance which is capable of all functions typically performed by two machines!
Many people enjoy the concept of integrated appliances because it saves a lot of space in the home and looks much better for homes where the washing machine and dryer and exposed to guests at times, but there are some disadvantages. Just like any type of new technology, it takes a while for the kinks to be discovered and worked out!
When it comes to the integrated laundry machines, the big downfall is that the early machines were energy guzzlers. They were known to raise your electric bill just as drastically as they cut down on the space they filled in your home. Luckily, there are some energy efficient models now hitting the market as this problem is being eliminated.
If you aren't sure about purchasing a newer technology, then you might feel more secure going with stackable washer and dryers.

Do I need a TENS unit, muscle stimulator, or combo unit?
My physical therapist said that I "pulled the crap out of my hamstring." I pulled about a year and a half ago and it has not gotten better. This is extremely bad because I am a dancer so it limits me a lot. When I go to PT i use a muscle stimulator machine. I want to purchase my own so that maybe it will heel before I go to college next semester. Should I buy a TENS unit, muscle stimulator, or a combo?
PLEASE RESPOND ASAP!! thank you so much
The answer depends on what applications you need it for:
- TENS is essentially the use of electrical current as a pain relief modality, generally the intensity is not enough for a muscle contraction
- Muscle Stimulation also uses electrical current, but at higher intensity to actually cause a muscle contraction and is used chiefly to strengthen weak muscles
- A combo unit would allow you to use either setting depending on your need.
So...
if you need the machine for pain relief: get the TENS
if you need it for strengthening: get the Muscle Stimulator
if you need it for both: get a combo machine
Also, keep in mind that the more features and functions the machine you buy has, the more expensive it's likely to be. You might want to consider asking you PT to advise you on what exactly you need.
