Converting From A Bells-Only Alarm To A Voice Monitored Alarm
Home alarm systems normally come in two basic versions - bells-only and monitored.
A bells-only alarm is just what it sounds like - if there is a burglar or intruder then the bell on the outside of the house rings to sound the alarm. Of course, the next thing that happens is that all the neighbours come running to see what's wrong; or maybe not. Perhaps it is late at night, perhaps it is during the day when everyone is at work, perhaps they think it is a false alarm. For whatever reason, you cannot always rely on a bells only system to deter the criminal.
It is because a bells-only alarm often goes off for no reason that the police might not respond even if a neighbour does hear the alarm and call them. They want some other confirmation that it is a genuine incident.
This problem is resolved with the second type of home alarm - the monitored alarm system. Now, when the alarm is triggered, the system dials through to a 24 hour monitoring centre.
There are two more choices now - the system can either just send data through to the centre (such as an ID to identify which household's alarm has gone off and which trigger caused the alarm) or it can also open a voice channel through to the monitoring centre.
There are some significant advantages to a voice monitored alarm. First of all, if it is a real burglary then the intruder might be deterred by the sound of a voice in the home. After all, it's much better to scare the burglar off than have to cope with all the insurance issues if they actually steal something (and even worse, they might take something of sentimental value). Second, it can also be used for medical emergencies, connecting the customer to a person who can ask them what the problem is and can then call the appropriate emergency response.
But what if you have already installed a bells-only burglar alarm? Is it too late to choose a monitored alarm? Will you have to rip out everything and start again?
No. It is possible to connect a converter to a bells-only alarm to add monitored alarm capabilities. It's actually not that technically difficult - the converter is attached to the bells-only alarm and senses when it goes off. So that bell still rings, but now a call is also made to the control centre. You really can have the best of both worlds.
