When I was a kid just learning to play, I would practice until my fingers blistered and sometimes bled. That was both useless and stupid. While there will be some muscle discomfort as your fingers adjust to doing things the muscles have not done before (as with most athletic endeavors), you should not play with pain. Heard Joe Satriani talk about that once and I agree. If you hurt, stop. Reduce your practice schedule for a while until your hands get adjusted to playing.
