LED Flashlights vs Traditional Flashlights
You may see in many adventure films, flashlights always come in handy in many emergency situations. Flashlights can become an important tool in your house in many cases. Traditional flashlights usually composed by a light bulb, flashlight case and powered by traditional batteries. They can disperse or assemble with ease and also very easy to use. But unfortunately, they are not always dependable. Light bulb used in traditional flashlight has a limited lifespan and always generate an unwanted high heat. How can I check the voltage of a battery in a flashlight?
For my engineering project, I'm testing to find out if the voltage of a battery is most affected in colder temperature or hotter temperature. I've set up my flashlights, one in a hot temperature room, the other in a cold temperature room. When I tried testing the voltage in the flashlight, it didn't work. I ended up taking the battery out of the flashlight and testing it. Also, I looked on the multimeter, and it read 7 mA, but I couldn't find the voltage. And, there was a status bar for a battery on the multimeter (it isn't digital) and the arrow landed on a question mark. Is there a way to test the voltage without having to take the flashlight apart? Will the voltage of the battery decrease when it's in the flashlight either way? How can I read the voltage on the multimeter?
P.S. The flashlight is small and it uses AAA Lithium-Ion batteries.
You will have to connect additional wires to the flashlight itself. Two wires are needed. Don't attempt to solder to the battery - hazardous. One wire connects to the circuit each side of the battery. There are many types of rechargeable lithium ion batteries, but expect 3.3-4V per cell.
The battery voltage can be tested outside the flashlight. I am not sure the result will mean much though. Yes it will vary slightly with temperature, and so what. The voltage will depend also on the age (use) of the battery and whether it is on or off.
Using the multimeter.
It should have its two test leads plugged in the correct holes, probably marked V+ and Common. These might be coloured red and black too. Switch the function/range and power switches (may be combined or separate) to DC volts range 10V or 20V depending what you have. Connect the two leads to the two terminals/ends of the battery. It should read the correct voltage for your battery type. It sounds like you have a digital multimeter and it should have a full battery if you wish to make meaningful measurements. You might have to find the user's manual to get it working properly - search on line for your multimeter maybe.. Your standard for testing the meter can be a fresh battery of known voltage. An alkaline cell will be close to 1.55V when fresh at 20-25C. Compare with another meter for greater certainty that yours is working properly..
It would make more sense to determine how long a fully charged battery runs the torch at the different temperatures. Record the voltage every minute and plot a curve. Start from the fully charged condition, making sure you have a good way to standardise the charging procedure without overcharging, so it is repeatable. Same test, same result. It should start from the same voltage at the same temperature for all tests. Now place the torch in the controlled temperature, and wait for the temperature to settle, perhaps one hour or longer. Turn it on, record the voltage with time to "end point" when the lamp starts to dim and the voltage starts to drop rapidly. This voltage can then be plotted against time for the different temperatures.. The end point should not be too low - a drop of 10% perhaps, and definitely not under 3V per cell. Make it the same predetermined voltage for all tests. For a 3.6V cell it may be 3.2V for example.
