How do I sight my gun?
My friend lost my muzzle break on my 7mm savage I just bought a scope, but am unsure how to sight it if possible without iron sight, i cant buy a new one at this time.
If you have access to a shooting range with sturdy benches, take the rifle with the scope mounted on it and place it on the bench in the shooting position on sand bags so it doesn't move.
Remove the bolt from the rifle and while looking through the back of the receiver and down the bore, move the rifle until you can see the target through the barrel. (This process is easier done at 50 yards as the target fills a larger portion of what you see when looking through the receiver and barrel)
Now, without moving the rifle, carefully look through the scope and adjust the crosshairs until they also line up on the target.
You have just "bore sighted" your rifle.
Replace the bolt at this time and fire a round. Your first shot SHOULD hit the paper. You then simply take a few more shots to fine tune the scope's crosshairs to point of impact.
Once you have your rifle sighted at 50 yards, you can then move on to 100 yards. Most hunters sight their rifles to strike 2" high at 100 yards. This allows most hunting calibers (yours included) to hit inside the "vitals" area of a deer out to 300 yards without having to compensate for holdover.
