It sounds as if you need to do a complete refinish job on your stock. Remove it from the action and barrel and remove all attachments such as the buttplate, sling swivels, etc. Once you have this done, you can strip off the old finish with an appropriate stripper that you can get from a paint store. Since there are many different finishes that are used on gunstocks, take it with you so the guy at the paint store can help you select the correct stripper. Then go to your local gun store and get a Birchwood Casey Gun Stock Refinishing kit. It contains a couple of bottles of things that you will need. Once you have the stock stripped completely, you can raise any dents that have found their way into your stock. Use a damp rag and a clothes iron. Put the damp rag on the dent and then use the clothes iron to steam the dent out. You may have to apply this technique more than once to get the dent completely raised back to normal. This will not work on gouges where wood has been gouged away. It only works on dents. Once the dents are raised, look carefully at the color of the stock to see if it is even. If some of the old stain is left and is uneven, you may need to bleach it with some wood bleach. This is available at the paint store. Once the stock is stripped, the dents raised and the color evened out, sand the stock with a fine sandpaper such as 220 or 320 grit. Dampen it with some water on a damp rag and let it sit and dry. This will raise the fibers. Sand them down with the fine sandpaper and wet the stock again to see if some more fibers raise up. Keep doing this until the stock no longer feels fuzzy after it is dampened. Now you are ready to apply the stain. Simply follow the directions on the bottle. It is simple and you will get a nice colored stock. When the stock is dry from the stain, you are ready to apply the finish. In your stock finishing kit you will find a bottle of Birchwood Casey True Oil. It's great stuff. Carefully follow the directions and don't get in a hurry. It takes a few days to get the finish that you want and will be proud of. Do exactly as the directions tell you and you will end up with a beautiful stock that you will be proud of and can tell folks that you did it yourself.
This is an easy task but takes time and patience. Anyone can do it if they just follow the directions and take their time. The finish you will end up with will be a high gloss finish. If this is what you want, you are finished. A month or so later, you can apply a protective coat of a good paste wax. Just wait until the finish has completely cured. If you prefer a softer satin finish similar to what you find on fine English custom rifle stocks, you can achieve this with another Birchwood Casey product called Stock Sheen. Give the finish a month or so to completely cure and then rub it with the Stock Sheen. Do this carefully and work slowly so that you can get a nice even satin finish. Stock Sheen has an extremely fine abrasive in it that knocks down the high gloss. Once you have carefully polished the whole stock evenly, you will have a magnificently beautiful stock. Just keep working and polishing until the sheen is even all over the whole stock. The result is more than worth the small amount of work that you will put into it. Good luck.
