Attentiveness to Hearing Loss
Hearing loss causes low self esteem due to those not respectful of requests for repetition. A hearing aid can help. So can positive feedback from sensitive listeners.
The outer ear is shaped with curves that capture sound and determine what direction it is coming from. When captured, the sound waves are transmitted through the external auditory meatus. Because of the shape of the pinnae, sound seems louder when you are facing someone who is talking to you. Sound waves are captured inefficiently from the person talking when your back is turned to them and sound quality is reduced. Plugging the ears muffles sound waves. These actions mimic the impact of hearing loss.
Bird Watchers Employ Actions to Enhance HearingBird watchers frequently cup their hands behind their ears and turn to face the direction of a bird call in order to enhance the capture of sounds from faraway birds. The sound-capturing surface is increased when pinnea and hands work together to better transmit the sound into the external auditory meatus.
From there the birdsong is mechanically amplified by the osseous members of the bird watchers' middle ears that amplify it as it moves on to the hydraulic system of the inner ear. The usually high pitches of birdsong are trilled along the base to mid-way to the apex of the cochlea. Hair cells fire the sound signal along nerve fibers and the signal is transduced as bioelectrical energy for processing by the cerebral cortex.
Listening Intently and Aides to HearingWas that a yellow-billed cuckoo or just the rattle-like call of a common American crow? Birders look at each other to repeat the sound pattern in a conversational pitch. Some look down and concentrate hard as they capture the next trill with the hand and pinna combination. Some tiptoe in the direction of the low and soft sound to decrease the distance and therefore turn up the volume a bit. Should an airplane fly over or joggers and their dogs run by, talking or barking as they go, listening skills would be inhibited by competing and higher intensity sound waves.
Some older birders can't hear the shy bird at all because of the low intensity of its call. Men can hear this call better than most because it is at a lower frequency. Sometimes the men don't hear the higher frequency sounds emitted by tiny kinglets and warblers. Some mean wear a digital device that lowers pitch so that they can hear a wider variety of bird sounds.
Why Can't a Birder Hear?Age and sex have a lot to do with the ability of bird watchers to have a meaningful "conversation" with the birds. Bird watchers who have a cold report that they can't hear because their "ears are plugged" and others say they can't hear because they are taking new medications.
Some individuals come out to the watch in spite of their diminished ability to hear, though. Those who can hear a broader range of sound are attentive to the needs of these folks. Several have iPod apps that play the birdsong loud and clear. Some older or hearing impaired birders are often the "best birders" who can identify a bird by markings, silhouette, flight pattern, preferred habitat, and likelihood of their appearance due to weather or season.
A skillful bird watcher knows that the Yellow-billed Cuckoo doesn't migrate to this area until early summer, so it must be a crow. Bird watchers are well aware that hearing is just one of many sensory and cognitive skills needed to have a "conversation" with birds and to converse knowledgeably with other bird watchers.
Nature Listeners are Sensitive to SoundIn spite of hearing deficits caused by age, trauma, medications, and occasional illness as well as hearing loss that requires one to wear a hearing aid, nature-loving friends are among the most sensitive to sound. They enjoy being away from the noisy distractions of life and enjoy listening acutely to the sounds of nature. Nature-lovers work together to be each other's ears (and eyes!). They are truly sensitive to looking at each other when speaking and to speaking clearly and distinctly. It's often necessary to speak quietly so as not to startle wildlife, so being sensitive to enunciation and talking directly toward the face are skills that add to everyone's enjoyment of nature.
