Hunters See the Benefits of Time Lapse Video Scouting Cameras
Scouting camera technology has been refined and enhanced over the years and we are seeing some incredible brand new features. Hunters are seeing increased success thanks to time lapse video technology that is showing up in new scouting cameras.
Time-Lapse Video scouting cameras are exceptionally different than traditional game cameras and operate in a completely different mode. In order for a standard game camera to capture pictures of game, an animal must pass within range of the detector. A game camera's infrared sensor will only reach out to 30 or 45 feet. If the game does not pass within the range of the infrared sensor, then no pictures will be captured. You need to analyze the effective range of an infrared sensor before hanging your game camera.
TLV scouting cameras function much differently than traditional game cameras, and resolve many of the issues hunters deal with today. Pictures are taken at pre-determined time intervals. The pause in between each picture can normally be set to different intervals, say every 5 or 10 seconds. What this gives you is a better view of activity in the woods. You get pictures of game that would normally have been out of range of your game camera's sensor. A TLV game camera will capture images of wildlife, as long as the game is within the field of view of your camera position.
Some traditional game camera companies have offered a food plot setting on some game camera models. Dedicated TLV cameras were inspired by this mode. The food plot modes on some game cameras has led to the introduction of dedicated TLV scouting cameras. Day6Outdoors recently introduced their Plotwatcher TLV to the hunting industry, and this dedicated TLV scouting camera has altered the way that outdoorsman watch for their game. The images can be put into motion (just like a movie) by using software that comes with the Plotwatcher. This allows a hunter to observe the movement of game and know the precise paths that they are using in the woods. There is also a motion search feature to this software. It allows you to jump directly to a frame where game activity is first detected. This is a big timesaver.
Gun hunters and bow hunters alike will have increased chance for success when using a time lapse video scouting camera. This is ideal for rifle or muzzleloader hunters who must to scout out bigger areas. Bow hunters now have the ability to ascertain the exact trails that deer are moving on, and fine tune their treestand locations to guarantee a close shot.

What is the purpose of a "scout" rifle?
I've seen these for sale and couldn't help but wondering if they are an option for an average hunter. Most are just shortened versions of usual production rifles in a middle of the road cartridge. Are they for kids? Do guys not intending to take game carry them for protection? Is it something totally else? I just can't see many outdoorsmen buying a rifle to save a few inches.
Has anybody bought a scout rifle and why?

The point of a "scout" rifle is to mount a long eye relief optic forward for quick sighting/wide field of view while "in the scope", and to keep the scope away from the ejection port for easy loading/clearing malfunctions. The rifle is supposed to be short, handy, and easy to carry. So these setups are found on carbines, originally this concept was applied to bolt action rifles.
This rifle is ideal for a hunt with lots of walking where you'd expect fairly short shots and desire a wide field of view while sighting. Col. Cooper thought it would be a great fighting rifle. He was wrong about that, the bolt action rifle he envisioned is not ideal for combat...But it may be ideal for hog hunting.
Ruger and Savage currently make bolt action "scout rifles" but where this concept works best, in my opinion, is on the Springfield M1A Scout/Squad and SOCOM rifles. The M1A's are capable of hunting and much better for defense than a bolt action scout rifle.
