How to make an elephant out of polymer clay?
I want to make a little elephant out of polymer clay to put on a necklace to give to a friend. Not a cartoonish looking elephant, but something that looks kind of ancient and as if it were made of ivory.
I looked on google and I found some good formulas for making fake ivory out of polymer clay; but the only suggestions I found for making elephants were cartoonish looking elephants and I want something more ancient, elegant, and mysterious looking. Can anyone direct me to any websites or books that might help?
Thanks!
Well, if you use some of the "antiquing" methods, and particularly on an elephant made from the various "faux ivory" techniques in polymer clay, almost any elephant would look ancient and not-cartoonish... just take out the cartoonish exaggerations of body parts like eyes, etc, and even "sculpt" the elephant more than combining shapes to make it (or smooth over the joins when doing the shapes method).
You've said you want a small elephant, small enough for a pendant, but you don't say if you want the whole elephant, or just the head... 3-d or bas relief (...or perhaps even flat maybe like "scrimshaw" or a "transfer").
There are a quite a few links at my polymer clay "encyclopedia" site that go to lessons for making all kinds of animals (including the 4-legged kind), but many lessons on any animals or 4-legged animals could be helpful too after just studying the basic shapes that are used to make them.
There are a bunch of those lessons on at least these pages of my site:
http://glassattic.com/polymer/kids_beginners.htm (click on *Animals*)
http://glassattic.com/polymer/sculpture.htm (click on *Websites*)
Here's something else from my site about making more realistic elephants in particular:
I make lots of elephants, complete with floppy ears, toenail & tusks but I consider anything over 1" tall huge.
My trick to making it look smooth and unjointed is to make head, body & trunk from one piece of clay except for eyelids, eyes, tusks & tongue. Legs, tail & ears are started as separate pieces.
I start out with a smooth egg shaped mass *draw out* from that enough mass for head & trunk, almost like siamese twin eggs wiht the head part smaller. The trunk is then drawn out of the "head" egg.
This is easier to show than to tell, but it works. Linda J.

Katherine Dewey also wrote a book on making realistic animals in polymer clay that you might want to check out called "Creating Life-Like Animals in Polymer Clay" which could be helpful for all kinds of relevant techniques (as little as $7 from amazon.com).

You could also just make the elephant (particularly for a flat-backed pendant) from a mold you buy, or better yet from a mold you make from a little elephant "toy" figure, or from a bas relief carving, etc. After removing from the mold and baking, antique it.
You can also stamp an elephant image into faux ivory clay, then antique that.
My page on various ways of making "faux ivory" with polymer clay may be one of the ones you came across when googling. But there are also other pages that you might want to check out at my site too --besides the sculpting ones I listed at top.
You can go to any of the pages below by just finding their names inside the alphabetical navigation bar on the left side of the ones above (or from the Table of Contents page in the "Source" listed just below):
