Is there anyway to detect police before they detect you?
Both radar and lazer detectors detect police after they've already detected your vehicle, so if your speeding than you're already screwed the detectors will just let you know ahead of time.. jammers are illegal in most places...so the question is, are there any devices that can detect police in the area before they are even in sight? Can police scanners do the trick? Are there any police scanners that automatically pick up radio transmissions of near by police vehicles? Not simply to hear what they are saying just to let you know that they are in the area.
You have a misconception about radar detectors. They will detect radar before the police get any readings from your car, if you have a quality unit. That's the whole point of a radar detector, and the only reason to have one. If you were right that "you are already screwed" no one would ever buy one. The radar is on continuously, or the officer is targeting vehicles ahead of you with radar gun, your detector will pick up the radar well before the signal is strong enough to bounce off your vehicle and back to the source.
And since I have one and it's warned me on at least several occasions, and since I got my last speeding ticket in 2001, I'm pretty sure they do work.
Now you are out of luck if the police turn their radar off when they are not targeting a vehicle, and there are no vehicles between you and the police that they want to check. In that case the officer will aim and turn on his radar when he sees you and you won't be able to pick up any stray emissions earlier. Then you are had.
As for laser that's a bit more difficult since they generally do not put out enough scatter to detect until your car is targeted. However, there is a type of coating you can paint onto your headlights and license plate that reduces the reflectivity of them dramatically. These are the areas police target because they are highly reflective normally.. This will give a good detector time to report the laser light to the driver before the police can get a reading, which they will do at close range.
And I know of no technology that would effectively detect police vehicles based on their radios; too many other sources of RF emissions in most urban areas. And they would only really be effective based on transmissions, which are quite infrequent from a police vehicle. While you can theoretically detect a receiver, you'll detect every television and radio in town.
