Reviewing the Rhin-O-Tuff OD4800 Manual Punch

Strengths:
- This is a manual punch that has totally interchangeable dies. There aren't many machines like this on the market, so that makes the OD4800 very unique.
- The OD4800 has a decent punching capacity. The most sheets of paper it can punch per lift is 12. Please note that the punching capacity can vary a bit depending on the die set you use, as well as the paper your document is printed on.
- There are die sets available for a variety of different binding methods. Some of the ones available are for binding with wire, plastic combs, color coils, and so on. There are even sets available for three-hole punching and the popular Velobind method. Changing sets is easy and doesn't require the use of any tools.
- All of the dies in each set are fully disengageable so you'll be able to punch the right amount of holes the size of your document calls for. Also, the dies are part of Rhin-O-Tuff's Swing Away Die Pin Retainer System. This system allows you quick and easy access to the dies while keeping them in place. It will come in handy if you ever need to disengage any of the pins.
- The OD4800 has an open throat that's perfect for punching letter-sized paper (8.5" x11") as well as longer documents.
- This is another one of Rhin-O-Tuff's durable, well-built machines. It was designed for heavy-duty use and is definitely up to the task.
- If anything happens to go wrong with this device, its one-year warranty will be there so you can get it repaired or replaced.
Weaknesses:
- Although the OD4800 has an open throat, punching paper that's longer than 11 inches could be a bit tricky.
- One die set come with the machine but the rest have to be purchased separately.
- This device's punching capacity is decent, but it definitely could be improved. It will take you a long time to punch your document if it's lengthy.
- The OD4800's punching handle is on the right side of the machine. This is great for right-handed users but left-handed people might have some difficulty using the machine. A D-shaped handle would have been a much better choice.
- The OD4800 is a punch only. You'll still need a machine to finish off your documents. Some finishers can be attached to this machine but it requires a special kit that's sold separately. If you need both a finisher and extra die sets, you'll wind up spending a fair amount of money.
Overall, the Rhin-O-Tuff OD4800 is worth a look, especially if you're looking for a punch that can produces different hole patterns. It's great that it has an open throat and that the dies in every set are disengageable. Just keep in mind that you need to have finishing equipment on-hand to complete the binding process and that this machine will definitely be much more user-friendly for right-handed operators.
