reloading shotgun shells?

so im 16 want to reload all of the empty hulls i have. so my first question is..if i go buy a box of factory loads and shoot them can i use those hulls again? second i know that reloading can and cant be cheaper then just buying a box but say i just load up some basic target loads how much would that cost per shell?

Allow me to touch on each of your questions seperately...

Generally, you can reload the empty hulls of just about any modern shotshells that you shoot. The one thing I will mention though is that sometimes the reloading press will need adjustments to properly crimp the shells of various manufacture. I have an old MEC 700 press that reloads Winchester AA hulls so well that they look like factory loads. On the other hand, when I try to run the Federal Gold Medal hulls through it, the crimp is sloppy and sometimes the shell actually gets a bend in the middle. I went to a yard sale about 15 years ago and bought some off-brand 12 ga. loading press for a mere $10 (it also came with some components). That thing loads the Federal hulls beautifully, so now I have one press set-up for Winchester and another set for the Federals.

Believe it is not, the Lee LoadAll is a pretty decent loading press for the money. It looks and feels cheap. And it is cheap in terms of price. But I bought one just to load my 20 gauge shells and it actually does a heck of a good job. Look for the Lee Load All if you want to start out cheap.

Lastly, let me comment on the actually savings in cost to reload your own shells. There was once a time, back in the late 1970s, where the cost of a new box of Winchester AA target shells cost about $3.25. A friend of mine did the calculations back then and had determined that he/we could reload and only spend $1.25 for components (lead shot, wad, powder and primer...assuming the hull was free). That was back when a 25 lb bag of lead shot cost about $10...and powder was also affordable. Today, in 2009, it is an entirely different story. The last time I was in a sport shop, I saw the 25 lb bags of shot selling for a whopping $34 a bag! Powder and primers and also more expensive these days. The other thing is, around the early 1990s ammo companies started making and marketing what are known as "promo loads". These are their cheapest shells and usually feature 1 oz (or sometimes 7/8 ounce) of shot in a 12 gauge shell. If you look in the newspaper circulars during the hunting season, these shells go on sale for about $3.50 a box. That's only 25 cents more than I was paying way back in 1976 for a box of target loads. That's a heck of a price. And, I really don't think you can load a box of shells that cheap.

So now the question is, "Why bother to reload shotshells at all?" For me, the only reason I still do it is because I have a lot of components that I bought waaaay back when the stuff was still affordable. So, I have a lifetime of hulls, a couple thousand wads, another thousand primers and got lucky and bought 50 bags of shot for another purpose (to anchor down some items) and so I am set for many years to come. Some folks just enjoy "rolling their own". But I can tell you this...some of my older friends that got me into shotshell reloading, that are still avid trap and skeet shooters, have sold all of their reloading equipment and simply buy a pallet of shells at the beginning of the target shooting season. They've now found that it is cheaper to simply buy the ammo in bulk upfront instead of spending hours and hours cranking away with their loading presses.
