Having a gun around is one of your best methods of defending your home. Home invasions, robberier, kidnappings or sexual assaults are all still unnerving problems in society today. A security system really doesn't go far enough, so having a gun around is probably the best way to protect your family from break-in danger. We took a look at the best type of handgun and a specific model in that type that would be the Best Handgun for Home Defense.
For the Best Handgun for Home Defense, we've chosen the full-size, semi auto, .45 ACP Glock 21. During the selection process, we used the following categories; gun size, round / caliber, capacity, reliability / readiness and gun type.
Gun Size
The size of the gun isn't really an issue in home defense purposes like it would be in areas like concealed carry because there's no size limit. In fact, having a bigger gun is probably a better idea, so you can hold more rounds of a higher power. That's why we chose the full size gun frame of the Glock 21.
Capacity
For a home defense gun, many people will say a .44 Mag revolver is the best choice, and I was just about to pick it. But revolvers have one major problem; their round capacity. A revolver is only able to hold 5-6 bullets, while the Glock 21 has the capacity for 13 rounds. A semi auto pistol also has the ability to reload a new magazine much more quickly than a revolver. In an actual home invasion, you would probably want all the rounds you could get, because you won't be the most accurate shooter when your heart is beating fast and you're that nervous and stressed. In those situations you will want to have as many rounds as you can, and a revolver really doesn't provide that.
Round / Caliber
For the caliber of choice in a home defense situation, we chose the .45 Auto round. It's very powerful as well as accurate, and has ample stopping from close distance. The overall size of the round is smaller than some of the revolver loads such as the .44 mag and the .550 S&W, which gives the guns a much greater capacity. Even though it isn't the biggest round available, it has ample stopping power in a home invasion.
Reliability / Readiness
There are many fantastic .45 Auto handguns available today that would work great in a home defense situation. I chose the Glock 21 more than anything for its reliability and readiness. Few people can question the reliability of a Glock handgun. They have a very simple design and are meant to fire every time you pull the trigger. The last thing you want in a home invasion situation is a jammed gun, and the Glocks will prove to be extremely reliable.
The Glock also has the safety built into the trigger, which makes it ready to shoot at any time. There is no worrying about switching the saftey when you want to be firing, and in such a stressful time, another thing to worry about is not a good thing. The Glock is meant to fire when you pull the trigger, period.
Gun Type
This section is what the entire choice of guns really came down to; a revolver or a semi auto pistol. The revolvers are simple, extremely reliable, and very accurate. Overall, they are probably more reliable than semi auto handguns, but capacity really made the difference here. Semi auto guns have the ability to hold and shoot more ammo, and reload more quickly than the revolvers, which is what swayed the decision in the favor of the semi autos. Again, during a home invasion, which will probably be at night when you can't see as well, you aren't going to be shooting 1" groups like you would be at the range. You want as many rounds as you can have to make sure the threat is neutralized.

All things being equal (which I admit they often are not), in order of decreasing preference, what are your top five personal defense handgun rounds in both revolver and semi-auto? Here's my list:

What's your list look like?
For self defence there are many factors to consider such as recoil recovery time which affects how quickly you can fire an accurate second or third round .
Over penetration which is partly to do with bullet design and partly to do with the weight and velocity of the bullet. A bullet that zips through a target does not deliver all of its energy into that target and so is less likely to incapacitate the target and also may possibly hit an innocent bystander,.
Number of rounds available before reloading is necessary , revolvers have from 5 up to 9 rounds in the cylinder , autos from 6 to 15 or more all depending on the caliber and the design of the gun , most self defence situations will be over after 3 or 4 shots or less but of course the exception is the one that can kill you.
Size of weapon matters a lot , it is no good having a .44 magnum revolver but you hardly ever carry it because it is so damn big and heavy. Better to always carry a .32 than to only sometimes carry a .44 magnum.
Having said all that I am still going to put some powerful cartridges in my list but I would use the less powerful loadings with appropriate bullets for self defence and only use high power loads for hunting or competition shooting of falling plates at the range.
