1. Get at least five quotes from different companies. With a service like www.ShipRightNow.com , you can make one free listing and get dozens of bids to assure you are not paying too much.
2. Know exactly what you are shipping. Be able to provide the weight, number of items, and the full measurements of each.
3. If you can crate it, or put it on a pallet, do so, this almost always gets you a better price due to the ease of handling, and you have the assurance of knowing how well your item is packed.
4. Know whether or not you will need a lift gate.
5. Will your item be picked up from a residence, or from a business with a loading dock? Usually a loading dock is much easier and more accessible to transporters.
6. Will your item be delivered to a business with a loading dock, or to a residence?
7. What days and hours can your item be picked up for transport? You will receive more bids if your item can be picked up and delivered without a restriction that binds a transporter down to a specific time.
8. Is your item hazardous?  Items that contain gasoline and oil may be classed different to some transporters, and if it will go onto an airplane or cargo ship, all hazardous fuels, solvents, and oils must be removed prior to shipment.
9. Whatever transport company you secure, be sure to check references.
10. Ask lots of specific questions of your transporter.

14. Be considerate of current fuel prices. Running any kind of truck and trailer is very costly, after insurance, fuel, permits, maintenance, and hotel rooms, this driver still has to make a living.
15. Ask the transporter if he will give you a daily update. This can be as simple as a text message or a quick voicemail, and will add to your confidence in your transporter.
16. Be sure you receive a receipt (bill of lading) with all of your transporter's information on it as well as the specifics of your item.
17. Take lots of photos. With digital cameras so prevalent, it only takes a few seconds to get some photos of your item in case of theft or damage along the way. Be sure the transporter or his truck is in some of the photos.
18. If you can assist with loading, let the transporter know, it might save you some money especially if it is a driver who is running alone.
19. Find out what kind of payments the transporter takes. If they will take credit cards or Paypal payments, it affords you more security should a dispute arise.

23. If shipping an item with a title, it is best to mail the title to the recipient, along with one key. The transporter will also need a key in case of the need to move the item, or to unlock a steering wheel.
24. Double check that all personal items have been removed such as key rings, tools, etc.
25. Find out how the transporter will deal with your item while traveling in inclement weather if using an open truck or trailer.
