Where to go on trekking expeditions in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Around Rio de Janeiro city, there are many places one can go trekking or even taking a 4x4 expedition for a few days. Places such as Ilha Grande for example, offers a great oportunity to get in touch with nature, with its beautiful and exotic beaches and wild life. Ilha Grande is an island just 2 hours south of Rio. Once in the island, one can stay at Abraão Village and from there, get to know most of the inner part of the island just by trekking.
The best and easiest way to go is thru an adventure tour operator, which usually includes transportation (land and sea), guiding service and lodging, plus the activities around the island.
Another interesting place is Serra dos Orgãos national park, just one hour from Rio, easily acessed trhu Teresópolis city. The full day trek takes you to a summit called Pedra do Sino, where one can watch the sunset and the sunrise the next day.
Going a little further towards São Paulo state, there is the Bocaina National Park, famous for its trekking trails, off roading, waterfalls and exquisite faunda and flora. The main trail in the park is part of the "caminho do ouro" (gold path), which was a sort of road the portugueses build in the past, to take the gold from Minas gerais state to the port of Angra dos Reis, where it was shipped to Portugal. The last quarter of this trail is right inside the park, and along the way travellers can interact with nature, by visiting famous waterfalls such as Santo Isidro, Posses and the imposing cachoeira dos Veados, standing 600 feet high. Along the gold path, travellers can rest at lodges created by local families, have a very decent meal and take a hot bath for an affordable price. For people that like adventures but put safety as number one priority, it is advised to hire the services of a tour operator, that offer packages including 4x4 transportation, food, lodging and outdoor activities.
Rio is an ideal place for these kind of activities, since is the main city in Rio state, and also, because most of the tour operators are there. A 2 to 3 days expedition to these places are enough to the the felling of the environment around the state.
