The Walther Talon Magnum Airgun
So went my first session with the Walther Talon Magnum, from Umarex USA.This Turkish-made spring-piston airgun packs a wallop, and the numbers from my chronograph helped me understand why. You don't sneer at 900+ fps in a .22 caliber spring rifle…..the majority of them shoot in the high 600's to low 800's. And this gun was nudging 1000 fps in .22 time after time, using RWS Superdome pellets.
Now, all that power doesn't come for free…..and the trade off is the stiff spring that calls for some serious tugging during the cocking process. The attached muzzlebrake helps, but I use both hands, because if I slip and let go, I'm afraid that spring will wrench the entire gun out of my grasp. When that happens, no one is happy, least of all the owner of the gun.
For hunters who enjoy the carefree appeal of self-contained guns like spring piston air rifles, coupled with serious power for that ultimate "smack" effect, you owe it to yourself to consider the Walther Talon Magnum. I received this gun some weeks ago and have finally found time to play with it. Included with the gun was a tin of RWS's excellent Superdomes, and I eagerly began trying out the combination.
It's hard to write about hunting with airguns when there is no open season available for small game, but I made do with the pests in the back yard. Using just the open sights today, I eradicated a pair of juvenile starlings with extreme prejudice. The RWS Superdomes and the Talon Magnum made a good combination. And small avian pests aren't the only game you can take with this combination. The power is there to take on raccoons and possum-sized animals as the need arises.
My hunt today went as follows…..I rose shortly after sunrise, and headed out into the edge of the tall timber that borders a creek near my house. Juvenile starlings are out in force his time of year, having just recently left the nest.They spend a lot of their time sitting in trees hollering for food, and it is relatively easy to sneak within range if you are careful and avoid being seen by the adult birds as theybring food to their mobile young.
Once in range, the fast-moving RWS Superdome proved a very lethal dose of medicine for these pests that plague bluebird and martin lovers across the USA. I gave the first bird its lethal dose, and quickly stepped back into the undergrowth to load up without being seen. The second of the two juvenile starlings was still trying to figure out why its nest mate was lying so still on the ground when the second shot connected with it. Later in the year, this kind of two-for-one shooting will be hard to duplicate as the get more and more wary.
While returning from my brief foray into the pest fields, I managed to take this picture of a rabbit dining on my lawn. Since they aren't in season at the moment, and I really didn't mind the rabbit doing his thing, I didn't shoot it. However, you can just imagine the flip it would have made if I had smacked it with one of the Superdomes that proved so effective on the starlings. The fiber-optic sights on the Talon Magnum help with quick target acquisition, and were easy to use. Had I squeezed the trigger, this rabbit would have been history!
Grackles, starlings, rabbits, squirrels, groundhogs, possums, raccoons…..all of them are within reach of this powerful break-barrel. The recoil is sharp and quick, the twang minimal, and the impact of the pellet on the target extremely satisfying. Give this gun some consideration for your hunting needs. With a synthetic stock, it will do double duty for you as a foul-weather field gun, too.

do you need to chronograph a new paintball marker?
i just got a spyder mr1 and it seems to shoot at a much higher fps than the gun i used when i was at an arena so do i need to check my fps before i go to the arena and play again?
Yes as Scamp said they all need to be Chronoed they are not set from the Factory & more often if you are running Co2 Velocity will fluctuate more as Co2 is temperature dependant Running Co2 can change +/- up to 50 FPS or more throughout a day
