How would investigators be able to tell if a gun shot wound was post mortem or not?
If a person has multiple gun shot wounds and originally dies from a gunshot then how would the police be able to tell if another one of the victims gun shot wounds was post mortem or not????
The police would not be able to tell. The medical examiner would be the one to determine that information and also which of the wounds was the fatal one. Regardless of what the previous answers say, a body WILL bleed after death, just not as profusely as it would after the heart has stopped functioning. Spatter is not produced by blood pressure, rather by impact. Blood does not pool in the lowest portion of the body at the moment of death. Livor Mortis (lividity) starts twenty minutes to three hours after death and is congealed in the capillaries within four to six hours. One thing a ME would look for is the constriction of blood vessels at the wound sites. Blood vessels in a living person spontaneously contract when exposed to trauma, so wounds without venal contraction would be post mortem.
