How to clean my shotgun?
My childhood shotgun has been in storage for 25 years (Remington 1100 12 gauge). I want to get it cleaned and back to good working order. It looks to be in good shape without any rust but it needs cleaning. What should I clean it with?
The more I read in these Q&A forums the more opinionated I become. I am beginning to think that our entire society has been brainwashed into thinking that we need a proverbial "nanny" to care for us. "Take it to a gunsmith", people are saying.
If firearms were properly cleaned and oiled before they were put into storage, they should be just fine. Trust me. If you take your Rem 1100 to a gunsmith, he/she will just do a light technical inspection that takes 15 minutes and charge you $60 for it.
This is what to do...
Order a complete instruction manual for your Remington 1100 from the factory. When you have that, you can simply follow the directions on how to disassemble the gun and clean it as they suggest.
Shotguns barrels are little more than a piece of pipe. There is no rifling, so there is nothing to impede the accuracy. A piece of cut soft cotton cloth with some Hoppes No. 9 gun solvent should do the trick to clean the barrel. Several motions with it. Then a couple of dry patches the same way. Finally some very light gun oil to keep the rust away.
A light wipedown with the same Hoppes No. 9 on the parts of the disassembled gun would also do the trick. Followed by wiping them clean and then some very light oil on the moving mechanisms.
The only problem I can foresee is if the gun was put away using some of the older cheaper oil products from long ago. Some oils actually turn into a shalack over time and will bind the moving parts. Again, some Hoppe's solvent should do the trick on those areas IF that was the case.
People have routinely put guns away for many years without any problems. In fact, in my own collection, I have enough firearms that I don't have the time to shoot them but once every couple of decades. About 5 years ago I inhereted a Winchester model 12 shotgun from a great uncle of mine when he died. Turns-out that he gave-up hunting back around 1934 after he was involved in a hunting accident (he was accidentally shot in the stomach with a .22 by his brother while rabbit hunting.) The gun was given to me and I began using it in 2004...a full 70 years after it was put into storage. The shotgun looks and shoots like new. The only mistake that was made was the gun entire shotgun was wrapped in oily rags and some of the oil seeped into the finish of the wood buttstock and discolored it. But functionally, it works just fine.
