The basic marker mechanism works by forcing the paintball out by a bolt, moved by airflow, which is located in the main part of the gun. After the gun is fired, a cocking mechanism places another paintball in the chamber either by an automatic action or a pump action.
There are essentially five types of paintball guns. They are pumps, pistols, semi-automatic, electronic, and stock. Of these five types, the pump action tends to be the cheapest and work just like a pump action shotgun would work. They are accurate; however you must manually pump the next paintball into the chamber, so depending on your game this could take too much time in a split second.
The most popular type of marker are the semi-automatic ones. Just as in a regular gun, the paintballs come out of the marker as fast as you can pull the trigger. These types of markers also come with very sensitive triggers so firing quickly is not a problem.
Many people who play also have a backup marker, mostly a pistol, which works with CO2 cartridges comprised of about 12 grams. You usually get about 10 shots before having to change the cartridge which is why they make fine backup markers.
If you have big bucks to spend and are not planning to use it in normal games, the electronic kind is great. These can shoot out 3 or more paintballs at a time each time you press the trigger.
The last type is called the stock gun. They are at a disadvantage because they also use the CO2 cartridges giving only 10 shots at a time. They are not that powerful, and if you are playing a normal paintball game, you might get your butt kicked and go home very bruised.
Some of the more popular paintball gun manufacturers are "Spyder", "Tippmann", and "Brass Eagle", but there are many others as well. The best thing you can do to try and find the best paintball gun is to try out several and see which one fits you the best. So not go out and spend a ton of money at first.
Buy something that feels good and upgrade over time from there. Remember that there is a good chance that other people playing are in the same situation as you are, so do not go out and try to impress everyone with your paintball equipment. Just have fun and stay safe!
