Computers are not the only devices that use lithium ion HP laptop batteries

Mission managers could not guarantee that a piece of the blanket wouldn't rip and slam into the spacecraft during re-entry, but said the chances were slim.

"You have a recruiter who can enable you to join the service or not join the service. That has life-changing implications for you as a high school student or college student," she said. "If she does not do this her life will be seriously impacted. Instead of getting training and an education, she might end up a dishwasher."

In a 2001 case, the U.S. Supreme Court found that federal agents had carried out an illegal search in violation of the Fourth Amendment when they used thermal imaging equipment to spot marijuana grown inside a private home.

Computers are not the only devices that use lithium ion HP laptop batteries. Several other small portable devices, such as cell phones, also use the technology. They too have been part of recalls due to fire hazards.

Intel, on the other hand, has been focusing on developing chips specifically tailored for notebooks. In 2003, it launched its Centrino notebook technology with a processor that boosted battery life by minimizing its power demand without hurting performance much.

Apple premiered a new television ad Tuesday touting its new partner: "For years, it's been trapped inside PCs, dutifully performing dull tasks when it could have been doing so much more. Starting today, the Intel chip will be set free and get to live inside a Mac. Imagine the possibilities."

LG will introduce its first portable media center, the PM70, with a 4.3-inch screen and 30 gigabytes Compaq Presario 1700 Battery of storage, enough for 50 hours of video or 7,500 songs.

Had blanket repairs been necessary, the work would have come during a fourth spacewalk. It would have been the second time during Discovery's 13-day mission that astronauts were called on to repair their spacecraft's thermal protection shield.

"They told us at recruiter school that girls, 15, 16, are going to come up to you, they're going to flirt with you, they're going to do everything in their power to get you in bed. But if you do it you're breaking the law," he said.

The sheriff's helicopters are often involved in other calls and unavailable for emergency use. Helicopters also make so much noise that SWAT teams have been known to order them away because they interfered with HP laptop batteries ground communications.

HP is promising its most comprehensive lineup of digital entertainment products yet. For 2006, the computer and printer maker will unveil seven ultra-compact digital cameras, ranging in price from $119 to $299.

CBS News Correspondent Peter King reports that NASA had worried some of that lightweight material could shred and damage the orbiter. A different kind of debris hit Columbia two-and-a-half years ago, causing the spacecraft to break apart over Texas as it headed to Florida.

"All that is, you have to remind yourself, is that there's jail bait, a quick way to get in trouble, a quick way to dishonor the service," he said.

Does SWAT use thermal imaging devices?

I was just reading something about Thermal Imagining Devices in my Criminal Justice book in relation to detecting heat signatures given off by lamps used for growing pot. I was just curious if SWAT also uses these devices to detect humans in a house in a hostage situation. If they don't I think they should because you could see where a person was standing and how many hostages they have without being able to see in the house.
If they do use these devices then what cant they see through. like can they see through solid concrete and still detect heat or through metal.

It seems you are thinking that thermal imagery can be used at any given time to seek heat patterns within a structure.

In law enforcement thermal imagery requires a search warrant under the guidelines of the 4th Amendment as it has been concluded by the courts to be an invasion of privacy requiring probable cause to "enter" a residence.

As such, with a search warrant, thermal imagery can be used in the investigation of a crime within a home.

Those cases outside a home, such as police helicopters following a suspect on the ground during the night or seeking illicit grow operations in a field is a different issue as there is no invasion of privacy nor an expectation of privacy.
