Many professions and hobbyists would have need of some very good tactical lights. Even just an ordinary householder would have no problem in needing tactical lights of some kind. If you take the word tactical literally it means made for the purpose of achieving an immediate or short-term aim. Therefore searching for something in the dark with a flashlight would come under that definition! Of course tactical lights are somewhat different to the normal kind of flashlight you may have in your cupboard or garage. Any tactical lights are essential to some jobs such as a firefighter or a police officer.
How do you go about choosing the best kind of tactical lights for your particular needs? There are several things to consider. One of the first things to look at is what do you want your tactical lights to be constructed of. Next you may want to consider what finish you would like on the tactical lights. The majority of tactical lights would be constructed of aluminum and have a hard anodized finish which makes them corrosion free and an anodized finish means very durable and a stronger finish.
Another thing you may wish to consider is the power supply for your tactical lights, and there are several things to think about here. tactical lights are rendered virtually useless with the improper batteries, and what you will find as standard in most is the lithium battery. Lithium batteries can perform well in extreme ranges of temperature. They are also lightweight which can be important with tactical lights. A heavy cumbersome flashlight can be a hindrance rather than a help in many situations.
A further thing to consider with tactical lights is the light source itself. There are tactical lights with xenon bulbs but by far the most popular today is LED lights. The benefit of LED is they are high output lights with a long run time. Many of the modern tactical lights feature a variety of output, which makes them extremely versatile as police or firefighters tactical equipment. A low output could be used in the cab of a vehicle and can be switched to a high output to highlight something outside of the cab or vehicle.
The choice of tactical lights will often come down to your own personal preference, but as a standard for a good flashlight the above things are worth considering. LED flashlights are more popular now than any other and that is due to the high output of light and the quality of light. A high quality flashlight that is reliable and easy to use can be of huge benefit to many different people. When choosing your tactical lights you need to assess the use of it before you buy. Many of the top of range tactical lights are expensive, but often the expense is justified in the superior quality and features of the flashlights.

What options for a tactical light do I have for a non-railed 1911?
Well, I have a S&W 1911 PD and want to get a tactical light for it but I think tactical lights made for non-railed handguns, like the Surefire 610R and 310R are discontinued models.
So, what other options do I have, other than send my piece to a gunsmith and have them drill holes in the frame and install a rail? Does anybody know and can help?

Seriously, if you must have the tactical light, trade your gun in for one that has the rail milled in.
