Transmission Clutch Basics
The clutch is surely an often overlooked section of a manual transmission. Without a clutch the vehicle has no way to disengage the power to the drive train allowing the vehicle to stop, start, or even shift gears. The clutch is located inside a compartment between the engine and transmission. This compartment is bell-shaped so it is called the Bell housing. The clutch is attached to the engines fly wheel along with the output shaft of the transmission, then is inserted on the clutch disc permitting the engine to rotate the shaft once the clutch is disengaged.
Pressure Plate: The pressure plate assembly is secured on the flywheel via mounting bolts connecting the cover stamping to the flywheel. During engagement, the pressure plate clamps your disc assembly against the flywheel, transmitting engine power to the transmission. During disengagement, power flow is halted when the pressure plate stops clamping the disc against the flywheel. Instead, the pressure plate lifts from the flywheel, creating a gap large enough for your disc to disengage from the flywheel, allowing the driver to shift gears.
Clutch Disc: The disc assembly is mounted on the input shaft, between the pressure plate assembly along with the flywheel. During contact, the disc slides forward along the input shaft and becomes solidly clamped, or "engaged", between the flywheel and pressure plate assemblage. During disengagement, the disc is no longer attached. Although your pressure plate and flywheel continue spinning, the input shaft and disc shall no longer be being rotated by engine.
Pilot Bushings: Pilot bearings and bushings serve for a guide and seat for your transmission input shaft during engagement and disengagement as the flywheel and pressure plate assembly switch at speeds different than the input shaft and disc assembly, your pilot bearing rotates.
Throw-out Bearing: Release bearings are intended to pivot frontward and compress your pressure plate levers, which will in turn disengage the clutch system. Although release bearings are all planned for the same basic function, they come in many sizes and shapes because they must work in conjunction with a varied group of actuation systems.
Consequently, angular contact bearings are usually matched with hydraulic systems, and are designed to remain constantly connected to the clutch diaphragm spring fingers. As a result, these bearings use a self-centering option that compensates for misalignment by centering your bearing equally within the diameter of your diaphragm spring fingers. This reduces noise, heat, vibration, and bearing decay while prolonging the life of the clutch system.
Standard release bearings, in contrast, aren't designed to get constant contact usage. Instead, they are engineered to work in conjunction with mechanical actuation systems since the release bearing thrust face is contacting with your pressure plate fingers only during clutch activation. Contact time, being so short, makes slight misalignment not an issue.
The most current change in release bearing technology has joined the clutch actuation systems and released bearing into just one component. This system is categorized as a CSC (concentric slave cylinder). It gets rid of your need for several additional components like the fork, bearing retainer, pivot ball, and traditional style release bearing.
