If you were an elk guide what would your opinion of this be?
If you were a guide out in the western states for elk hunting, and you were going to be a guide for a guy, and you meet with him, and he is carring a .308 Winchester. What would you say abou tthat, good bad, ok, great, What? A winchester Model 70 .308
My father went on several elk hunts in Montana. He always took along his Winchester model 70 pre-64 rifle in caliber 30-06. He always bagged and elk. One set of antlers that I still have has a bullet hole in the skull where he made a head shot.
I am thinking that a 308 is very close ballistically to the 30-06. HOWEVER, Glacierwolf's comments here make a whole lot of sense. I do know that elk are about 4 times bigger than mule deer. Everything about them is big, including the bones that you might have to penetrate with a bullet.
My final thought on this is that if a person has the money today to go on a guided elk hunt, he/she should also invest in a modern day magnum caliber rifle with good optics to do it right. That said, I think the minimum caliber I would go with would be a 7mm Rem Mag.
